To my parents, David & Lucille, who, by God’s grace,
instilled within me a passion
for memorization and
meditation on Scripture

My second career as a writer unexpectedly began in my second year of medical school when I stumbled into the creative world of screenwriting. In a sense, An MD Examines came together remarkably like a major Hollywood film, complete with an executive producer, coproducers, editors, directors, a film studio, a screenwriter, even actors and actresses. Using the film analogy, here are the “rolling credits.”

I must begin by thanking my Executive Producer on this extensive project, my Lord and heavenly Father. The astonishing way in which God brought these talented individuals together blows the fuses in my mind. Whether or not this production wins an Oscar here on earth, God, and God alone, deserves all the glory.

Heather Gemmen, my brilliant producer and content editor, rocks! She enthusiastically presented this project to the studio, Cook Communications. My exceedingly wise co-producer, trusted friend, and mentor for more than twenty-five years, Garry Jenkins, helped steer me clear of false doctrine and “fluff.”

Craig Bubeck, like an experienced Tinseltown director, finely directed the thematic and visual components of this project at Cook. And the assistant director, Diane Gardner, and film publicist, Michele Tennesen, smoothly coordinated events, meetings, and communique between location shoots. There are so many others at Cook who played key roles; I thank them so much for their dedication to spreading God’s truth around the world!

Every film needs a good editor. In addition to those mentioned above, Audrey Dorsch worked her own movie magic to bring the scenes together seamlessly.

Script consultants can make or break a film. Several provided valuable advice from scene one to “The End”: Garry and Matt Jenkins, Sherri Spence, Dr. Val Jones, Wendy Elaine Nelles, and my parents. God provided other consultants for the production at key times, including world-renowned surgeon and author Dr. Paul Brand.

The Word Guild, the largest Christian writing association in Canada, played the role of a Hollywood talent agency perfectly, bringing together the screenwriter with the editors, producer, script consultant, agent, and even the production company for this powerful movie.

And what’s a film without the actors and actresses? My sincere thanks goes out to all those individuals who brought this film to life by allowing the world to see their inspiring stories.

I am grateful to Les Stobbe, my hard-working agent, who helped make this series possible. My heartfelt appreciation also goes to my parents, David & Lucille, whose understanding and support during those tough years when I took a half-decade sabbatical from medicine to write this series ensured my success. I love them both very much!

In almost every film there is a love interest. To Erin, my beautiful wife, I’m looking forward to serving the Lord together for the rest of our lives.

And finally, to my brother Darryl (a stunt coordinator in training) who told me in 1999 that one day I would write a book, and I laughed!

I apologize.

While Brad did complete a year of surgical training to become a Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation specialist, he is not a "surgeon" as described on the back covers of some of the books. This unfortunate error will be corrected in subsequent printings.
